Gov. Butch Otter accepted a ceremonial check that was big in both size and amount Tuesday -- $297,678 pledged by state workers. Otter, in turn, presented the check to Ada County Sheriff Gary Raney, president of the board of United Way of Treasure Valley.

Since 1999, state employees have contributed almost $4.5 million to United Way through the annual Employee Charitable Giving Campaign. This year's co-chairs of the employee campaign were Mike Rush, executive director of the Idaho State Board of Education, and Janet Gallimore, executive director of the Idaho State Historical Society.
