5th Annual Children's Book Drive - A TOTAL SUCCESS!

We are still half floating on clouds/half crashing at our desks in the aftermath of the 5th Annual United Way Children's Book Drive. We just cannot get over how many books were donated this year! 109,322 to be exact. That's incredible! We weren't sure we'd get to our goal of 100,000, but we certainly never dreamed we'd SURPASS our goal. Especially by over 10K!
It takes a lot of hands and hearts coming together to pull something of this magnitude off. The entire staff at United Way of Treasure Valley is honored to put this event on every year, and could not do it without the help of our volunteers. This year, we had 529. Amazing.
Every year, the book drive turns into a 3-part series:
1.     The 1-day kick-off event at Barnes and Noble.
2.     The 1-week book drive at which time the books are collected.
3.     The 3-day book bash, where the books are gathered, sorted, cleaned, and distributed.
It's a lot of work, but it's a lot of fun. You really think of it as a labor of love, because deep down, we all love our community and want to see it thrive. And that's why Book it Forward Idaho dreamed up the idea in the first place. After attending a conference in which they learned that only 1 in 300 low-income children owns a book, they knew something had to be done. We talk about these kinds of issues a lot because we know how important education is to lifting people up and out of poverty. But education has to start early-on; as early as possible in fact. And it's as simple as putting books into the hands of every children in every home.

Thank you to the following partners and sponsors:

Book It Forward Idaho. The ladies of Book It Forward Idaho dreamed up the Book Drive and United Way simply bolsters it to a new level.

Barnes & Noble. Without the support of Barnes and Noble, the 200 children's literacy kits that were put together for Canyon County children would not have been possible.

Easter Seales Goodwill. The Book Bash was held in the warehouse Easter-Seales Goodwill shares and they are so kind to lend their space to us in order to serve a larger population of children who need books.

Lotus Media. 94.9 The River, 100.3 The X, J105, and 107.1 K-HITS go above and beyond to help advertise the Chilren's Book Drive, and are of course, our preferred local stations to move and groove to during the Book Bash.

KIVI Channel 6. The good people of KIVI always help us spread the word and even came out for an interview during the Book Bash.

Albertsons. Albertsons is one of our major sponsors, donating thousands of pounds of food to this event and each store also serving as a book drop off location.

CapEd Federal Credit Union. CapEd Credit Union helped us kick off the Book Drive by sending EdWord the Worm to our Barnes and Noble Kick-off event. Each branch also served as a drop off location.

See you next year!
