POSTPONED - Sound the alarm, save a life (day 2)

Red Cross, local partners team up to install free smoke alarms in West Boise

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO THE SPRING 2018, AS THE AMERICAN RED CROSS ALLOCATES RESOURCES TO HELP THOSE AFFECTED BY THE HURRICANES AND FIRES.

Did you know that seven times a day, someone in this country dies in a home fire?

On Sept. 29-30, volunteers from the American Red Cross of Greater Idaho, United Way of Treasure Valley, the Boise Fire Department, Energize Our Neighborhood and SERVPRO of Boise will team up to install free smoke alarms in homes in West Boise as part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, volunteers will canvas neighborhoods, install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and help families create escape plans.

“Smoke alarms save lives, they cut the risk of dying in a home fire nearly in half,” Boise City Fire Chief Dennis Doan said. “If smoke alarms are installed and maintained properly they’re your best defense when it comes to saving your life and the life of your family.”

The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters a year, the majority of which are home fires. Working smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. The Red Cross wants to end these tragedies and save lives, the reason why the organization launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014.
