The Story of Holiday Tamales

As we come to the end of another festive season, we want to extend our warmest wishes and deepest gratitude to our donors, volunteers, partners, and friends for your support of our community through United Way.

At the end of each year, we like to do a little something extra for those who dedicate the most time to our cause; our Board and Community Cabinet.

This year, we were delighted to share delicious tamales handmade by our friend, Senora Victoria. Victoria resides on The Boise Bench and exemplifies the spirit of resilience in the face of economic challenges.

Victoria is ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and faces the daily struggles that many in our community endure. Despite uncertainties and limited job opportunities, she has been working on and off at a Mexican restaurant in Meridian. Recently, she received notice that her workdays would be reduced to just Saturdays.

Residing in a mobile home that she shares with her grandson, Victoria strives to maintain her independence without burdening her two married daughters who also fall under the ALICE category. While she receives occasional assistance from her daughters, she remains determined to contribute to her household.

Victoria's culinary skills, particularly in preparing tortillas and tamales, are truly remarkable. In the past, she used to bring joy to gatherings by providing on-site tortilla and quesadilla making. Unfortunately, due to health issues, she had to discontinue this practice.

The tamales our Board and Community Cabinet enjoyed this holiday season were not just a culinary delight but also a testament to the resilience and strength of individuals like Victoria. When we support local artisans, we directly support those like Victoria and contribute to their well-being.

Once again, thank you for your continuous support and commitment to positively impacting the lives of those facing challenges in our community.

Wishing you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season filled with warmth and happiness!

With heartfelt appreciation,

Shawn Reilly & the Resource Development Team of United Way
